Love was definitely in the air in Pilton this year; three family weddings were held at the farm this summer! First was Mamma J’s brother in July, then one of her nephews in August and the last in October for her niece. Us Big Girls love a wedding and it warmed our hearts to see so many family tying the knot this year.
It was extremely busy on the farm promoting Organic September – an annual promotion which runs the whole of the month introduced by the Soil Association; the organic certification body our farm and produce is certified by.
The yoghurt team who are always busy had an especially packed month of making yoghurt for promotions with customers and new flavours to launch for Abel and Cole.
On 11th September our delicious yoghurt was given away to morning commuters at Canary Wharf tube station exit in London as part of the Organic September Abel and Cole/Brown Cow Organics promotions
Back in August our lovely customers Abel and Cole asked us to make some unique organic yoghurts especially for them. On 16th September after many months of Mamma J putting her head together with the Abel and Cole team two organic yoghurts made by us exclusively for Abel & Cole for their newly launched organic free range dairy and eggs range were launched. Us Big Girls love the two flavours which are moocha and moomalade; what moovellous flavours and names are they!
Also in September River Cottage invited Mamma J to attend the River Cottage at Borough Market event in London, so our butcher Jason and Mamma J went up to showcase our delicious organic produce to London customers.
We were so excited and delighted when Farmer Clive told us Big Girls that we had reached the finalists stage in not one, not two but three different awards! The first result came in September when we won Highly Commended in the Bath Good Food Awards; we had to wait patiently for a couple of months then to find out if we had won either of the other awards.
November – joyful and sad times
We were heartbroken when our friend Toby the farm boss sheepdog passed away suddenly at the beginning of the month. He was loved by everyone on the farm – both a friend to us animals and all the people; he was Farmer Clive’s right hand dog and friend, going out in the pastures whatever the weather. Toby came to the farm as a puppy Farmer Clive told us and marvelled at how Toby didn’t need training, he instinctively knew what to do and he passed his sheepdog skills to Flo his partner dog on the farm when she joined some years later. Our yoghurt team spent many a sunny break playing chase the ball or stick in the courtyard with him when Toby wasn’t working. Toby also protected everyone, barking to let production and the office know if anyone came into the courtyard. At the bottom of my autumn blog I’ve shown some more photos in memorial of Toby; we all miss our lovely sheepdog friend.
Triple win for our Live Organic Vanilla Yoghurt
Brown Cow Organics won THREE major awards with our live organic vanilla yoghurt at the Quality Food Awards announced on 9th November. The Quality Food Awards are regarded at the most prestigious awards for food and drink products on sale in the UK. We were the only independent food company to receive multiple awards, us Big Girls were skipping and kicking our hooves with joy to hear this fabulous moos.
Farmer Clive and Mamma J were presented with the awards at a spectacular dinner ceremony for 700 people at London’s Grosvenor Park Hotel in London – the awards to celebrate the Food industry’s greatest producers which was attended by many chefs, food writers and representatives from the major multiple food stores.
Say Hello to Alfie
Farmer Clive soon realised that Toby’s highly praised skills with rounding up the cows from pastures was going to be sorely missed- a good dog can do the work of many men combined so a search was on for the next dog to take on the task. Alfie arrived at the beginning of December and at just 10 weeks old is making his presence known with Maisie our 18 year old cat (as you can see on this video she’s not impressed and Flo just looks on nonchalantly in the background)
It will be an exciting 2018 for Alfie and all the team on the farm and at Brown Cow Organics
Till my next blog
Toby ‘Top Dog’ we will miss you
