Dams, shabby books and passports
Do you remember when I was born nearly 2 years ago I told you all about how Mamma J had to register my birth with a government organisation called the British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) that included details of my mother’s ear tag and my eartag number? So now the same had to happen with my daughter and with every animal born on the farm.
Should any animal move on or off the farm it is Mamma J’s responsibility to tell the BCMS the date of each movement and where the animal has moved to. Soon after my baby calf was born she had 2 eartags put in each ear, one small yellow one and the other a larger triangular shape. Once this was done Farmer Clive noted all the details in his own “Calf book”- a now very shabby book!
This book has details of every calf born and their dams (that’s the calfs Mother), with records going back to 1991! Here is my calf’s entry put in once she was born.
Then once this is done every calf born here on Perridge Farm has to be registered on the BCMS website and this is my calf’s entry.
And then this week the end result is a passport for my calf that will stay with her wherever she goes
I think spring is definately on it’s way, the daffodils are budding, and yesterday the sun shone all day, it was lovely! Speak to you next week with more moos from the farm.
